Motorcycle Stabilisers:

Stabilisers are not a safe substitute for being able to put your foot down to stabilise a motorcycle!

We have yet to encounter a stabiliser system that is practical and safe for the use on public roads by people with disabilities who cannot rely 100% on putting either foot down to stabilise a motorcycle in the event of a stabiliser system failure.

To be suitable for road use; a stabiliser system would need:

  • A fail-safe method of deploying the stabilisers in the event of an electrical or mechanical failure.
  • Interlocks that prevent them being accidently deployed when travelling at speed or while negotiating a bend.
  • A facility to automatically adjust when encountering uneven road surfaces, potholes, raised manhole covers, acute road camber, etc.
  • Interlocks to ensure they automatically disengage/raise as the motorcycle moves off.
  • A system of suspension to facilitate soft deployment.
  • Hopefully, a safe and reliable system will be developed in the future but, until then, the NABD does not recommend the use of stabilisers on the road and NABD adaptation grants will remain unavailable for this type of adaptation.
