The NABD ‘Learner Loaner’ Scheme,  Motorcycle Training & Tests

You never know what’s around the next bend in the road, but, with the right training, you can be ready for it…

Rules for Provisional Licences and Tests

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

All riders with a provisional licence must complete a mandatory one-day course before riding a moped or motorcycle (up to 125cc) on public roads with L-plates.

The CBT course is valid for two years. If the Module-1 & Module-2 tests have not been passed within 2-years, a further CBT course must be completed.

Theory Test

There are 2 parts to the theory test:

  • Multiple choice questions.
  • A video test about spotting hazards on the road.

Both parts are booked and taken as a single test. Both parts must be completed sucessfully to pass the theory test.

A Theory Test must be passed before booking the Module-1 & Module-2 practical motorcycle tests.

Practical Motorcycle Tests

After you’ve passed your theory test you’ll also need to pass:

Normally, you can book the riding tests separately or at the same time, but you must pass the Module-1 test before you take the Module-2 test.

The UK government are currently looking at some radical changes to current legislation on motorcycle training, testing and licensing.

This consultation opened on 7 January 2026 and will close at 11:59pm on 11 May 2026.

Do I need to tell my insurer if I have a disability?2025-10-29T12:44:08+00:00

Yes, you must disclose any disability which can effect your ability to ride or drive a standard unadapted vehicle. However, insurers cannot load your premium simply besed on your disability. This is a protection offered by current Disability Discrimination legislation in the UK and throughout Europe.
