Full Ombudsman Report

Dealing with the Driver’s Medical Group (DMG) at the DVLA can often be frustrating, especially for those with complex disabilities. While the DMG generally handles straightforward cases well, many members have reported challenges, particularly when it comes to more complex situations.
It’s important to note that the staff at the DMG are often under significant pressure due to funding and staffing cuts, and delays shouldn’t be blamed on them directly. However, there has been consistent feedback over the years about inconsistent decision-making and pigeonholing individuals based on perceived disability limitations rather than considering individual capabilities.
In 2015, after a series of complaints, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman investigated the DMG’s practices and found numerous issues with their approach. Their report, “Driven to Despair”, highlights the need for the DVLA to treat each case individually and more fairly.
