Regaining a Motorcycle Licence After Medical Revocation
If your motorcycle licence was revoked on medical grounds, it is often possible to regain your entitlement. The process depends on whether the revocation was recent or historic.
Recent Revocation
1. Check Your DVLA Letter
Your revocation letter will state:
- The reason for revocation
- Any mandatory waiting period
- When you may reapply
You can usually apply up to 8 weeks before the end of the waiting period.
2. Gather Medical Evidence
You may need confirmation from your GP or specialist that you meet current medical standards.
3. Complete the Required Forms
- D1 Driving Licence Application Form

Historic Revocation
For riders whose entitlement was revoked many years ago, restoration is still possible — even for cases dating back to the 1970s.
Submit Application Forms
Complete and send the D1 and G1 forms (links above).
Provide Medical Evidence
- Clearly defined disabilities (e.g. amputation, paralysis) are often straightforward.
- Neurological or complex conditions (e.g. stroke, MS, brain injury) may require additional evidence.
Consult your doctor before applying.
Supply Historic Evidence
Include a detailed letter to the DVLA Medical Group containing:
- Current and previous names
- Current and previous addresses
- Date of birth
- Driver number (if known)
- Copy of old licence (if available)
- CBT details (if applicable)
- Motorcycle test details
- Date and reason for revocation
The more detail provided, the better.
If the DVLA Cannot Locate Records
Sometimes the DVLA may claim no entitlement record exists and suggest retaking the test.
Do not give up.
Administrative errors are not uncommon, and further evidence or escalation may resolve the issue.
Support & Escalation
- Contact the NABD for advice and potential advocacy.
- If unresolved, you may escalate to the Parliamentary and Health Ombudsman.
After Regaining Your Licence
If you have not ridden for some time, consider:
- A refresher course with a reputable training school
- Gradual return to riding to rebuild confidence
