Informing the DVLA About Disability or Medical Conditions
The NABD operates across the UK, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
For clarity, this article focuses on mainland UK rules. Links for other territories are provided at the end.
Legal Requirement to Notify
You must notify the relevant licensing authority if you develop:
-
A disability affecting safe motorcycle control
-
A medical condition affecting riding ability
-
A condition requiring long-term medication that impacts safety
Further guidance:

Failure to notify the DVLA may result in:
-
A fine of up to £1,000
-
Prosecution following an accident
-
Insurance invalidation
What Usually Happens After Notification?
Many riders worry their licence will be revoked. In practice, this is uncommon.
Most physical disabilities — including amputations, spinal injuries, brachial plexus injuries and musculoskeletal conditions — do not usually result in licence withdrawal.
Re-testing is rare.
In some cases, the DVLA may require:
-
A medical report
-
A motorcycle or trike assessment
Often, the outcome is simply licence codes being added to indicate required adaptations.
How to Notify the DVLA
Complete the medical notification form and send it with your licence:
http://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/395956/G1.pdf
Always make copies (or clear photographs) of both sides of your licence before sending it.
Unless specifically instructed by your doctor, you may continue riding while awaiting a response.
NABD Support
If you need help completing the notification form, contact the NABD.
If a member disagrees with a DVLA decision, the NABD may make representations on their behalf — where there is a valid case.
